Gamified Workout Apps for Lifters, Compared
By Boston Naviaux, founder of Menos · Published October 16, 2026 ยท 6 min read
Most gamified apps add XP, levels and quests to a plain logbook. Reprove, GymQuest and GYM RPG do that, and their store pages describe no feature that chooses your next weight. PUSH adapts your program but has no game. Menos does both, on iPhone only, as of October 2026.
Menos is our app, so one of the five below is ours. Everything about the other four comes from their App Store listings and websites, read on October 16, 2026; this compares what each app publishes, not how it feels to use. Where a page says nothing, the table says so rather than guessing.
What is a gamified workout app?
A gamified workout app rewards logged training with game mechanics: XP, levels, streaks, quests, an avatar or bosses. The workout log underneath is usually ordinary, and the game is the reason to open it.
For a lifter, one question matters more than the art style: does the app only record what you did, or does it also decide what you do next? A logbook with a game on top rewards showing up. A progression engine tells you the weight, which is what makes the numbers on the bar go up. The chart places each app on those two ideas.
How do the five apps compare?
Three of the four apps beside Menos are new: the App Store lists Reprove, GymQuest and GYM RPG as released between May and September 2026, while PUSH has been out since 2022. The table shows what each listing says.
| App | Game layer | Picks your next weight | Price | Platforms |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Menos | Bosses, XP, levels and heroes | Yes, free | Free. Menos Full is $2.49/mo or $19.99/yr. | iPhone only |
| Reprove | XP, levels, streaks, medals, avatar items and leaderboards | Not described in the listing | Free core. Reprove Pro is listed at $6.99/mo or $39.99/yr. | App Store listing; no Android page found |
| GymQuest | Five classes, XP, badges, a skill tree and quests | Not described in the listing | Free. Premium options are listed from $3.99 to $79.99, including a lifetime unlock. | App Store listing; no Android page found |
| GYM RPG | Ninja and Mage classes, party boss raids, gear and pets | Not described in the listing | Free. Pro is listed at $7.99/mo or $49.99/yr, plus gem packs. | iPhone and Google Play |
| PUSH | None described | Adapts sets, reps, rest and volume from your results | Subscription after a free trial; the listing shows plans from $9.99 to $89.99. | iPhone and Android |
What does each game app actually track?
Reprove, GymQuest and GYM RPG all log sets, reps and weight, and each one turns that log into progress you can see. They differ in what the game is built from.
Reprove
Reprove records sets, reps, weight, duration, distance and notes, and builds XP, levels, streaks and percentile-based medals on top. The listing names global and friends leaderboards, weekly quests and cosmetic avatar items bought with in-game Essence. The core workout and progression experience is free; Reprove Pro adds planning flexibility, guided training tools and deeper exercise insights. The listing does not say whether it suggests your next weight. Reprove's own site blocked automated access, so only its App Store page is cited.
GymQuest
GymQuest, by Pierre Hahn, gives you a class (Guerrier, Éclaireur, Mage, Berserker or Aventurier), ten avatar stages, badges, a skill tree and daily, weekly and monthly quests. It logs exercises, sets and weights, detects personal records and ships Push/Pull/Legs templates. The US App Store page is written in French. Several unrelated apps share the GymQuest name, including a bodyweight-only one, so check the seller before you download.
GYM RPG
GYM RPG, by Joao Azevedo, is the broadest of the four. It logs weightlifting, bodyweight work, cardio and nutrition, and turns that into a Ninja or Mage character, muscle-group skill trees, gear, pets and cooperative boss raids with a party of friends. Its site says Push Pull Legs plans and barcode scanning need Pro. The listing is at version 0.7.6, so expect it to change quickly.
PUSH
PUSH, by ADPTV Limited, is not a game. Its listing and site describe an adaptive hypertrophy program built from published research, where sets, reps, rest and volume update from your performance data. They describe a coach and no XP, levels or bosses. It is included because it covers the thing the game apps skip. Its listing says the app requires a subscription after a free trial.
Which gamified app is best for barbell lifting?
No single app wins, because the right pick depends on whether you want a game, a coach or both. Among the game-first apps, Reprove and GymQuest are the closest fits for loaded lifts, and GYM RPG fits mixed training that includes bodyweight and cardio.
- You choose your own weights and want a game on top: Reprove or GymQuest for loaded lifting, GYM RPG if you also run, do calisthenics or want nutrition inside the same app.
- You want a program built for you and no game: PUSH.
- You want the app to pick the weight and the game: Menos, if you are on an iPhone.
The trade is real. A game layer on a logbook rewards consistency, and consistency matters. The weight on the bar still depends on a rule, and the apps above that describe no such rule leave it to you. The article on how much weight to add each workout covers the rule you can apply by hand.
Do any of these apps choose your next weight?
Of the four other apps, only PUSH describes adjusting your plan from your results: its site says sets, reps, rest and volume update automatically from performance data. Neither the Reprove, GymQuest nor GYM RPG listing describes a feature that sets your next load.
Menos picks the next weight for every exercise, free. Hit the top of your rep range on every set and the weight goes up one step; stay inside the range and it holds; miss twice in a row and it drops about 10%. The first session of a big lift ends with an ALL OUT set that calibrates the starting weight. The progression engine is the same one whether or not you play the game, and Logging Mode turns the dungeon off if you only want the tracker.
What does Menos lack?
Menos lacks Android and a web app, because it runs on iPhone only. GYM RPG lists a Google Play version and tracks meals, and PUSH lists Android. If you train on Android, Menos is not an option today.
What it adds is a boss for every exercise, XP, levels and heroes, live co-op parties and duels that are free, and a progression engine that needs nothing written by you. See the free versus Full breakdown for what the optional Menos Full subscription adds.
A game that also picks your weight.
Menos is the lifting RPG. A rule-based engine picks your next workout from your history, and every exercise is a monster in Dungeon Mode. Free on iPhone, with an optional Menos Full subscription ($2.49/month or $19.99/year) for game extras.
